MORE THAN JUST COFFEE
Did you know that coffee is the second largest traded commodity in the world, second only to crude oil? The worlds fascination with coffee is continuously growing. According to the National Coffee Association‘s 2017 National Coffee Drinking Trends (NCDT) report, in 2017, the percentage of consumers who reported having a coffee drink within the past day jumped five points from last year to 62 percent. And it appears that younger consumers, ages 13-18, are showing strong consumption rates, particularly in the “gourmet” coffee drink category.
As younger consumers, Millennials, help support the expanding foothold that coffee has in the market, they also influence how coffee is grown, harvested, roasted, and experienced. Today’s consumers want a cup of coffee that is more than just a cup of coffee. They want their cup of joe to be a form of personal expression, a therapeutic source , and an environmental cause. They expect their cup of coffee to deliver a boost of energy, full of flavor and health benefits gathered from sustainable, high quality ingredients, healthy roasting processes, and bio-degradable packaging that is good for the environment.
Coffee companies are quickly turning to science and new technologies to better understand the individual properties and compounds that give coffee its great taste, healthy value, and its competitive advantage in the market.
THE BENEFITS OF COFFEE
Coffee fans around the world, it’s time to rejoice. Recent studies suggest that a cup of coffee, the source of your energy and boundless comfort, can also provide you with some health benefits.
According to Tomas DePaulis, PhD, research scientist at Vanderbilt University’s Institute for Coffee Studies, overall research shows that coffee is far more healthful than it is harmful.
Even WebMD is reporting that “Coffee is a rich source of disease-fighting antioxidants. And studies have shown that it may reduce cavities, boost athletic performance, improve moods, and stop headaches — not to mention reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, colon cancer, liver cancer, gall stones, cirrhosis of the liver, and Parkinson’s diseases.” However, while there still remains much more research to be conducted we are delighted that coffee is starting to be seen in a positive, rather than negative light by coffee consumers around the world.
Coffee Fingerprinting™
Testing Certification Program
In an effort to identify and quantify the presence of Micro Toxins and Acrylamide in coffee beans and coffee products, the California Coffee Authority™ (CCA) has entered the coffee arena with the most sophisticated and targeted analytical equipment and testing methodologies in the industry.
As a global service to international coffee growers, coffee manufacturers, roasters, coffee mills, and coffee retailers, we map, identify, quantify, and provide an exclusive Coffee Fingerprint™ for each coffee been or coffee product tested.
Coffee beans, ground coffee, roasted coffee, and coffee products never have the same analytical identification or profile. Our Coffee Fingerprint™ Testing and Certification Program is the only one in the world that has been designed to accurately detect, quantify and qualify the polyphenols, phenolic, and other beneficial compounds hidden in coffee beans and accurately fingerprint each coffee and coffee bean we test.
We also focus on testing coffee beans from the 70 countries globally producing coffee, with the overwhelming majority of the supply coming from Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia and Ethiopia. We specialize in testing coffee and coffee beans that are infrared roasted (processed at very low temperatures).
